What did you think of the smell? I am not a fan! Though I did enjoy the rhubarb crumble I made. I can see why it’s often paired with a sweeter fruit like strawberries.

Had seared foie gras with rhubarb on a soft cracker last night at Cafe’ Juanita. It was the best appetizer I’d ever had. Check out the chef Holly Smith at CafeJuanita.com

Forget the strawberries and other fruits. Just go for a straight rhubarb pie. I use the Joy of Cooking recipe.
My 90 year old pie-making mom just moved in with us and the rhubarb outside is ready. How can I send you a picture?
The little white specs look really cool! I really want to use rhubarb in some jam this summer.

Old Mrs Wenberg shaking her ancient finger at us kids as we scramed out of her yard with big handfuls of stolen rhubarb stalks. Whoa, was she scary. The saliva’s running just thinking about chewing on that stuff once we got where it was safe.
BEAUTIFUL ! Perfect for a wordless Wednesday! Did I read you had a new camera? SLR? You are capturing such depth. I have to say that Julie’s post made my mouth water! Aw they all did.
My house in Chicago has the most amazing bed of rhubarb, just sitting there next to the asparagus beds… the house is for sale and it breaks my heart that nobody is harvesting it.
They do have rhubarb here in Hawaii, up north in Waimea, but even there it doesn’t turn very red, barely pink really, and I hate the idea of using food coloring!
Virginia: That muffin recipe sounds fantastic! I was already thinking about making muffins or a cake tomorrow. I have quite a bit of rhubarb and I’m looking forward to experimenting more tomorrow!
Great photo of the rhubarb – it’s making me wish I had bought some last week when I had the chance. I must make rhubarb bread soon.

what a gorgeous photo ! When I was little my great aunt (Annie Owens, Grammy’s sister) used to make rhubard pie. She also used to cook it up and serve it in dish in a sweet syrup. I remember liking it.
OMG! Rhubarb!! I was raised around southern Lake Michigan. Rhubarb was the first “fruit” of the season that we could pick for pies. My grandmother lived with us. When I cut and brought in the first bag full, they’d be just as happy as me. Within a couple of days they’d knock out a couple of rhubarb pies, sometimes with raisins. Don’t eat much of it any more because of all the sugar required to blunt the strong native bitterness but the memories are so sweet!.
Gabi: The rhubarb came from one of the Farmer’s Markets down here in San Diego. My garden is bare at the moment. My lettuce is done and I never got around to planting anything else. My summer is filling up quickly so I’m thinking the vegetable garden might best be put off til next year!
How odd… I saw someone checking out yesterday here in Sig with these and was all like “What the…” I couldn’t figure out what it was (honestly, i’ve never seen a stalk of Rhubarb before in my life). Welp, now I know!!
I always have rhubarb envy when everyone else seems to have it before the chilly Midwest. I just made this season’s first batch of rhubarb jam, sweet lusciousness on toast!
These sticks of rhubarb look like candy! They’re beautiful.
3:08 pm May 27th, 2009i have been craving rhubarb cake!
