I absolutely love fruits. I have a bowl of fruits on my desk at work. It makes it easier for me to snack on the fruit, versus going to the vending machine.

This weekend I went to a Christmas party. I kept gum in my mouth except while I picked a few healthy items from the ton of food and felt really good about my choices and even lost a half pound! Yea!

I don't deprive myself entirely -- if I really want something, I'll have at least a tiny bit of it. If I give into a bowl of pasta covered with cheese, or savor a piece of cake -- I want the ingredients to be fresh and home made. The only way that I can keep my weight down is to not give into the urge to over-indulge too frequently. I love fresh salads with pepperoncinis, artichoke hearts, hard-boiled eggs, craisens and dark leafy greens. I am very aware of calories in vs calories burned, so I am on the treadmill 4-5 times per week and work out with hand weights. And yes, I watch The Cooking Channel just about every morning while doing it -- I've seen so many reruns of Molto Mario, Melting Pot and Simply Delicioso... but it works!

My way to stay healthy is: 1) never do a diet (because the stress of depriving me of things will make me want them more); 2) I use extra virgin olive oil for everything (NO butter) and always raw at the end of the cooking (otherwise you fry food) 3) I eat good carbs (durum wheat, emmer or orzo pasta, brown rice) every day so that I feel full for many hours and I don't think about food. I eat fruit but in moderation and in between meals. 4) I eat little cheese and meat. I eat lots legumes and seafood (I live in Southern Italy, so that's easy....meat is terrible here) 5) I eat things that I like (pizza, dark chocolate etc) once a week and in moderation. 6) I always use the stairs and walk (if I can) instead of driving the car and get stuck in traffic (again I live in Italy!)

Eat a wide variety of foods in Moderation so that your body gets all the various nutrients it needs. Focus on eating well-balanced meals with proteins, fibrous carbohydrates, and healthy fats (unsaturated from plant sources). In addition, drink plenty of water (which is one of the best things you can do for your diet that many people tend to overlook) Consume wholesome, unprocessed foods, focusing on foods that contain only 1 ingredient such as vegetables, fruits, nuts / seeds, olive oil, fish, etc. B.T.W. This is a really cool bog that has some really great looking recipes.
