Ten Things You Might Not Want to Know about Me and Food

February 24, 2008 by Nicole 26 Comments

I don’t usually participate in any of those ‘blog tag’ games that circle around the internets. It’s not that I don’t want to do it. In fact, I usually have good intentions when I get tagged. It’s just that I have this little problem called procrastination that seems to interfere with just about every blog post I plan on writing. So this is a formal apology to every blogger who has ever tagged me for one of those internet memes in the past. I meant to follow through, it just didn’t happen.

So what brings this up? Well, I have recently been tagged not once, but twice! And since I’ve been laid up with the flu for over a week and haven’t cooked a single thing, I figure I’d might as well respond to some questions about myself rather than let that post about Oprah’s expired book giveaway hang out at the top of the page any longer.

First I was tagged by Recipe Girl, a fellow San Diego food blogger who wants me to answer 8 specific questions about myself. And then I was tagged by Roni of Green Lite Bites who wants to know 7 things about me and food. Well, I’ve decided to change things up a bit and just write ten things you might not know (and might not even want to know) about me and food.

1. I don’t always feel like cooking.

2. Even though I love real Italian pizza, there will always be a place in my heart for real American pizza. I prefer Round Table.

3. I dislike most seafood and have only cooked fish once in my life.

4. I am not a ‘foodie.’

5. I hate raw onions and will never, ever, ever want to eat them (but I cook with them almost daily).

6. I dislike mushrooms and asparagus but am working on getting over it.

7. I will always choose creme brulee, creme caramel, panna cotta or flan over any kind of chocolate dessert.

8. Homemade bread warm from the oven spread with lots of butter will always be my favorite food.

9. I will sometimes eat nothing but grilled cheese sandwiches for a week straight.

10. When I’m sick, I only want to drink 7-up.

Now don’t you feel like you know me so much better? Ok, maybe not. But If you’re just dying to know more, here are some resources for you:

  • My list of five things to eat before you die
  • An interview of me done by Rachel over at Food Maven
  • Another interview of me by Nina Smith at BlogHer

I’m not going to to tag anyone else to participate but if you feel inspired to open up and share a little about yourself, leave a comment telling us a couple things about you and food.

I hear ya the onions thing but red onions are absolutely delicious raw. As for seafood...that's OK...more for us! ;)

I totally agree with you about the 7-up thing. That's what my mom gave me when I was sick as a child. It always makes me feel better. I'm sure it has a lot to do with all of the sugar :)

Fun & RecipeGirl is right...you are a good sport to play. 7 up is a staple when we are sick around our house..it's the only consolation when my 3 year old is sick - she gets to drink a "mommy drink".

Peter: Sorry, can't even eat red onions. Believe me, I've tried. I can handle them raw in salsa but they pretty much have to be minced so that it's impossible for me to pick them out :-) The seafood thing gets better each year but I still prefer to eat other forms of protein. In Sicily I did enjoy swordfish and even had some squid every once in a while. But canned tuna is about the only thing I'll eat on a regular basis. Erin: We always got 7-up and juice bars when we were sick. I've outgrown the juice bars but 7-up is still the only thing that will settle my stomach. I'm sure it's all in my head but hey, it works! Melanie: I'm feeling better each day but this is definitely the worst flu I've had in years. Guess I'd better think about getting the shot next year. Ouch! :-) RecipeGirl: You're welcome! Thanks for not minding that I made up my own rules ;-) Roni: You're very welcome. Thanks for tagging me! RecipeGirl: It's nice to hear that others still like 7-up. It seems like everyone I know prefers Sprite or other lemon-lime sodas :-)

Nicole, I wouldn't have guessed the seafood thing, esp. with all the time in Sicily. What IS the definition of a foodie, by the way??? (and I dislike all sodas except Orangina, it seems)

Curt: I know, I know. Believe me, I try to enjoy seafood, I really do. And yes, I had some great stuff in Sicily. But I'm just not a seafood lover and don't think I ever will be. But I'll keep trying. As for the foodie thing. I can't give you a definition because it could mean so many things. But to me, it means someone who really tries to keep up with the latest food and restaurant trends. Some people embrace the term and make it their own and I think that's great. But for me, it just doesn't seem to fit :-)

Knowing you so well, was like reading a recap on your life Nicole. hehe It used to drive me nuts that you didn't life seafood because it is my favorite!!! But we have had fun at many a good restaurants so can't complain too much. My Mom used to give us 7-up when we were kids, and I am now doing it for my daughter when she gets sick. Funny how that sort of thing gets passed on. I've been sick off and on this entire season, I got the flu shot but it didn't seem to help. I hope your feeling better!

Ruby: My not liking seafood has never stopped you from ordering calamari at just about every restaurant we go to! :-) I'm feeling better but still not well enough to make it to school today. I can't remember ever being sick for this long. I think I'll be up and out of the house tomorrow though, I can't take being cooped up any longer.

My mom always gave us Vernor's Ginger Ale when we were sick, and we ALWAYS drank it with a straw. Maybe someone can relate to me, or I am just weird, but when you pour ginger ale in a glass, the air in the glass, when breathed in, makes you cough, and I don't know any other carbonated drinks that make me cough like that...anyways, good times.

Dustin:I never got to drink my 7-up with a straw and I never pour ginger ale into a glass so I can't verify the coughing thing. I'll take your word for it, though! ;-)

Just discovered your blog recently and I'm really enjoying it (and the recipes). Reading your list was too funny because I am almost exactly like you although I have overcome a few of our shared dislikes in the last few years (I've got a few years on you so perhaps you will get there too LOL). My tip about raw onions (and the only way I can or will eat them) is red onion soaked in rice vinegar. Takes all the bite out of them and leaves them sweet and tender. That is the only way I can tolerate them. Mushrooms I still mostly dislike although I can tolerate them on pizza or in a wicked mushroom cream sauce I make for pasta (pure comfort food). Seafood I mostly don't do except prawns or salmon (hate any other shellfish sadly). And I too will always choose a creme brulee or flan over anything chocolatey. Just not a chocolate lover I guess. I guess we are kindred spirits! BTW although I've never been to Italy (yet) I grew up in Mexico (I am Canadian) and have a huge love/affinity for all authentic Mexican foods. Maybe one day I'll get to live in Italy.

Ginger ale is the one and only when you're sick! Is that a Canadian thing?

Jen: I am from Upper Michigan, which might as well be Canada. I never asked my mom why the Ginger Ale.

I'm with you on the onions. I had my first grilled cheese in years the other day with my mother in the US. I love Ginger Ale...wonder if I could make it....

I feel the exact same way about onions. I despise the taste, texture and smell of raw onions, however I value what they bring to my dishes. I hope you feel better very soon, and thank you so much for sharing these tidbits. It makes me feel pretty good to know that, in all of your awesomeness (and yes, you do have awesomeness), we have a tiny little something in common. Grilled cheese sandwiches rule! Thanks again!

Nicole--First, I hope my belated comment finds you feeling fine now and cooking up a storm. And second, when I was tagged recently, I thought I was absolutely the last person who had not been tagged. I only had to come up with seven things, but I made up for it by blabbing on about how I met my wife, road trips and getting thrown out of Stonehenge.
