The Most Important Ingredient? Music.

June 22, 2007 by Nicole 17 Comments

One thing that I don’t talk enough about on this blog is music. But wait, you say. This a food blog, right? Yes, yes, I know. But ask me what the most important appliance in my kitchen is and I’ll tell you without hesitation that it’s my CD player. To me, a kitchen without music is a kitchen without life. Cooking is fun. But dancing around the kitchen with your favorite song turned up? That is living.

Speaking of favorite songs, I was recently asked to be a “Song of the Week” contributor over at The Plugg, one of my favorite entertainment blogs. Once a week, The Plugg writers offer up their favorite song picks, and it’s always a great and eclectic mix. But this week they decided to take a break and let some other bloggers contribute their favorites. If you want to listen to my pick for song of the week as well as see what some other bloggers are listening to, head over and check out The Plugg’s Song of the Week – Blogger Special.

Terry over at Blue Kitchen has a page on his site dedicated to the music playing in his kitchen. He calls it ‘What’s on the kitchen boombox?’, and I plan on copying his idea sometime soon (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?). But until I get my own music page set up, I’ll be filling you in a little more often on what I’m listening to in the kitchen. Hopefully, you’ll do the same! Today I’ve been listening to Rodrigo y Gabriela on my kitchen boombox, what are you listening to?

Nicole, I'm amazed by how much I relate to your post! I have always listened to music while cooking, even since I started having fun in the kitchen. It's mandatory. ;) I sometimes listen to the same song 20 times (I know, it's crazy). Lately, it has happened with "Look after you", by The Fray.

Oh! Music is what keeps me moving in the kitchen. Depending on what I am doing I listen to different music. I love to listen to Ella Fitzgerald when baking but when cooking, buena vista social club is what I almost always playing!

I've been pondering the same thing, music & food...a wonderful pairing. I've seen other blogs that combine food & music and I've been contemplating putting up my music interests but I'm afraid my loud rock might scare the (&^% out of some. Hmmm....

Patricia: I do the same thing! I can listen to the same song or album over and over and over. It drives my husband crazy :-) Erin Lou: I love Ella and Buena Vista Social Club! I've actually had the Buena Vista Social Club CD in my car for about a year now :-) Peter: Come on...let's hear it!

Peter: I love that stuff! I've been a huge Stray Cats fan since I was a kid (some friends and I did a silly dance routine to Stray Cat Strut for a talent show in elementary school). I still listen to the old stuff and also to Brian Setzer. I don't know the Meteors but I'll look into it. Corinne: We can fit more than four...we'll just borrow some tables and chairs from Nana :-)

PERFECT post! I love music and it's always on in my house. I built my house about 7 years ago and I put speakers in every room in the house, including the bathrooms, garage, screen porch, kitchen! Music is always on! My wife thinks I'm nutz b/c I have 3 iPods, one for the car, one for the house and one for the outside when I'm BBQing. Steve

How fun! To imagine the music of other kitchens. I've officially started a list of kitchen music I want to try. As for my sounds, I just went on the hunt for some 80's music to play on a road trip with my girls and have rediscovered the Sugarcubes and Siouxie. Also the Sparks (I seem to be stuck in the S's.). Playing loud and proud with all my windows open, big breezes blowing all those great smell through the house. My kids don't know what to do with me. They often don't. - Erica

I love jazz while I cook. When I make my videos I leave the music off for production value (edit track in later), but when I'm not on camera I always play music!

I love that you guys are responding to this post! Steve: Your house sounds wonderful :-) I actually dream about getting a couple more ipods because I'm always moving mine from my car to the kitchen to the living room... Erica: I still listen to The Sugarcubes on occasion although haven't listened to Siouxie for years! Thanks for sharing :-) Brocha: I could guess from your vodpod that you would listen to jazz in the kitchen :-) Jonathan: I actually don't listen to much jazz in the kitchen and I'm not sure why. I'll have to try it :-)

I sometimes say "fat makes it taste good" or "butter makes everything taste good", but it should be "music makes food taste better"!!!

Thanks for the mention, Nicole, and feel free to copy away. As this post clearly shows, you've hit on the importance of music in the kitchen---and in our lives.

This is 150% true! I cannot not have it - I like to say cue the music maestro - as if to create something genius.

I couldn't agree more! I'd be lost without my music in the kitchen. For some reason, I love to listen to French music while baking . . . some that I am currently enjoying: Paris Combo, Rouge Rouge, Pink Martini, MC Solaar . . . Keep up the great blogging!
