What’s Simpler than a Smoothie? Strawberry Milk

April 11, 2008 by Nicole 43 Comments

Strawberry Milk

Do you ever have cravings for something you’ve never even tasted? Well, that happened to me yesterday when I picked up a basket of local strawberries from the market up the street. I happened to have a quart of whole milk from Strauss Family Creamery in the fridge and all I could think about was combining those bright red berries with a glass of that rich and creamy milk.

I had never craved strawberry milk before. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever tasted it. But something inside me knew that it was the right combination.

Strawberries in Glass

First I filled a tall glass with one cup of fresh strawberry halves.

Strawberries and Milk

Then I added one cup of whole milk plus a couple spoonfuls of sugar.

Strawberry Milk

Then I just blended the whole thing together using my favorite kitchen appliance, the Braun Multiquick Hand Blender.

The result was a rich, thick and creamy milkshake that I enjoyed ten times more than the elaborate smoothies that I sometimes make in the morning.

Now some of you might be shocked that I have whole milk in the fridge. I know that you probably stopped drinking whole milk years ago and most people I know don’t even remember what the real thing tastes like.

It’s true that I use skim milk on my cereal and for most other daily needs. But I almost always have a quart of whole milk on hand for special things. For instance, I like to use whole milk in my cappuccinos. I also like to use whole milk when I make something like french toast. And now, I like to use it in my strawberry milk. Quite frankly, I don’t think it’s going to kill me. Everything in moderation, right?

For those of you who are used to eating nothing but fat free dairy products, a glass of this strawberry milk will taste like a rich and luxurious treat. And with only 144 calories and four grams of fat per serving, it’s not going to sabotage your diet. Give it a try!

Strawberry Milk

1 cup fresh strawberry halves
1 cup whole milk
1 -2 tablespoons sugar (to taste)

Blend all ingredients until smooth using a hand blender or traditional blender.

Yield: 2 servings

Nutrition info per serving (using 2 T. sugar): 144 calories; 4 grams fat (2 grams saturated fat); 24 grams total carbohydrates; 2 grams fiber; 4 grams protein

Notes: For those of you who need or want to stay away from sugar, I made a version of this drink using powdered stevia in place of the sugar. I added two packets of Trader Joe’s brand powdered stevia in place of the sugar and it tasted great! I personally don’t use chemical sweeteners like splenda but if that’s what you prefer, I’m sure it will work great too.

That looks so delicious! Can't wait to try it. It reminds me of a recipe I saw on Sesame Street of all places - banana milk - same thing but with bananas. Mmmm!

Craving stuff you never had before...PREGNANT! I made some peanut butter milk the other night. Except for sugar, I put my fiber supplement powder in it. Wasn't that great.

Laura: Doesn't surprise me at all that you saw a similar recipe on Sesame Street since this is definitely something for the kids! Doesn't Nestle make a kids strawberry milk drink? I've actually made banana milk before and that's another really good one! Jason: I can assure you that there will be no 'big announcements' from me at the family reunion next week! Peanut butter milk does not sound good so I'm not surprised that it didn't taste good. Sounds like something Justin would want to try...

I'd love to try this with some vanilla frozen yogurt in place of the milk!

Jugo de Fresa con Leche is a morning drink here in Peru in most of the jugerias (the fruit juice stands) and is one that I love!

nicole, i stopped at chinos (the farm stand i told you about off of via del la valle) and they had some both california and french strawberries. i bought a pint of the french (5 buck a pint! expensive!) but seriously! they had flavor! they rock. i went back and bought three more. anywho, they would make for a killer smoothie... if you can bring yourself not to just eat them raw! also right now they had an insane array of greens and tons of things i had never seen/heard of. i also got some pretty little arugula blossoms that hopefully i can get around to using before they wilt.

You mean you've never ever had the Strawberry Milk that Nestle sells? That stuff is way over the top with loads of sugar (but it's good stuff.) Your freshly made version looks infinitely better though!!

I often have whole milk in the fridge! For baking & such. Of course, I'm sure it's not nearly as delicious as your fresh milk! This looks yummy...just wish the strawberries around here looked as lovely as yours!

I loved Nestle strawberry milk as a kid. But this is over the top grown-up fabulous. My mouth is watering.

Great, now I'M craving Strawberry Milk! I actually have a carton of real milk in the fridge at most times to use in cooking too. But for just a glass of milk or for cereal etc, we normally use non-fat.

YUM Nicole! I made strawberry milk a few weeks ago for a kiddie's birthday party, but it wasn't anywhere near is fabulously-pepto-bismol-y pink as yours! I blame it on air-freighted strawberries...I've also tried making a strawberry milk frappe with frozen strawberries and it's just the thing-thang-thong for ultra-hot Singaporean days.

This looked so good I had to go straight to the fridge and try it. I had to sub 2% milk and used agave nectar rather than sugar, and boy was it good!

Well, I *am* pregnant, and you've had me craving this for nearly a week! I finally made myself a glass of strawberry milk this morning. Why don't I make simple treats like this more often?
